Neuhaus chocolate is often regarded as one of the best chocolates in Belgium but with their main offerings having expensive price tags in the $50 range, the chocolatier might seem out of reach for most people. However, they actually do have more affordable chocolates on their website. I placed a large order of everything they had on their website that’s under $20 and in stock. I wanted to investigate whether their most affordable offerings would still have exceptional flavor and quality. I’ve had their higher-end offerings like the 1 lbs ballotins and the milk chocolate collection. Out of everything I tried, the following were my top 5 favorites.
1. Neuhaus Chocolate Bars – Best for someone with a budget
The Neuhaus chocolate bars are the cheapest options ranging from $4.90 to $5.25. Even at that price point, the packaging was still beautifully designed, with rose gold lettering and muted fall colors. The box was sturdy and the chocolate was wrapped in a rose gold wrapper to keep the chocolate fresh. There is a range of classic flavors like milk chocolate bar, milk chocolate almond praline, milk chocolate crunchy caramel, white chocolate mocha, dark chocolate raspberry, dark chocolate hazelnut praline, and intense dark chocolate 70%. Out of all the chocolate bars, I enjoyed the milk chocolate crunchy caramel most. The combination between smooth milk chocolate, crunchy biscuits, and creamy caramel was simply divine.
2. Neuhaus Chocolate Tablets – Best for chocolate bar lovers
The Neuhaus chocolate tablets are the next cheapest at $9.25. The flavors available were milk chocolate 35% cocoa, milk chocolate salted caramel, milk chocolate crunchy cookies, white chocolate vanilla, dark chocolate 80% from Uganda, dark chocolate orange, dark chocolate with raspberry bits, and dark cocoa nibs 100g 70%. My favorite chocolate tablet was the milk chocolate salted caramel. Regular salted caramel chocolate is usually a little too intense and the caramel feels overpowering. However, Neuhaus’ salted caramel chocolate was the perfect blend of saltiness and sweetness. The flavor was cohesive and complex. I also have to give a shout-out to the white chocolate vanilla tablet because it was some of the best white chocolate I’ve ever had. I couldn’t stop eating the chocolate tablet once I started.
3. Amusettes Me-Time Bag – Best for sharingwith a group or casual snacking
The Amusettes Me-Time bag was listed for $15.90 when I bought it. Out of all the Neuhaus products I tried, the Amusettes Me-Time bag probably has the least luxurious packaging but I think that’s intentional to make it more approachable. Each Amusette is individually-wrapped which makes them perfect for sharing. There were five flavors of Amusettes included in the bag: Blonde Salée, Nougat Miel, Café, Caramel, and Biscuits. I thought the flavors were quite different and innovative. I was impressed by the effort that was put into each of these flavors. After trying all of them, I concluded that I liked the caramel and biscuit flavors most. The ingredients were also still very high-quality and beat anything you can get in the grocery store. Even though they were definitely not as good as the flagship pralines, for the price, I believe they are worth every cent.
4. Discovery Classic – Best for gifting
Neuhaus is most famous for its pralines. In fact, they are credited as the inventor of the Belgian praline. For $17.90, you can try six of their classic and most popular chocolates. The box contains a variety of milk, dark, and white chocolate with names like Frédéric, Cœur Praliné, Cornet Fondant, Criollo 80%, Neuhaus Lait and Diamant. It’s a good way to try these famous pralines before committing to $50+ ballotin and collection boxes. They are also packaged elegantly beautifully in a sturdy box and a rose gold ribbon making them a great gift for special occasions. The variety, quality, and flavors of these pralines are exceptional and are a must-try for any chocolate lover.
5. Duo Chocolate Bonbons on the Go- Best for trying unique flavors
I was most excited about these bonbons in my order! Both the packaging and the bonbons themselves were so colorful and exuberant with fascinating citrus and floral flavors. There are 5 flavors: raspberry, lime, mandarin, violet, and lemon, and 10 pieces of bonbons total, so two of each flavor. They are the same price as the Discovery Classic box at $17.90. A lot of chocolatiers make flavored chocolate by using artificial flavoring but these bonbons don’t have any artificial flavoring. The flavor comes from infusing the fruity or floral ingredient in white chocolate. This makes the flavor very close to the actual fruits and flowers instead of an artificial, chemical flavor. The combination of the infused white chocolate tops with the dark or milk chocolate Gianduja bottoms was an explosion of complex flavors and is what makes the duo bonbons really unique.
Conclusion
Overall, I was pleased and impressed with everything I tried. Neuhaus did not sacrifice quality or craftsmanship in their more affordable offerings. Each product was well thought off and designed. You can tell that a lot of work was put into making these chocolates.
