Ferrero Rocher Chocolate Review

Rating:
1.7/5

This Ferrero Rocher Chocolate box was gifted to me. I decided to review it because it is such a popular brand and was a childhood favorite of mine.

The Ferrero Corporation

Ferrero Rocher is a company under a larger Ferrero corporation that encompasses other brands like Nutella, Tic Tac, Kinder, Butterfinger, Crunch, Baby Ruth, and Fannie May. Ferrero Rocher chocolates consist of a whole roasted hazelnut, a hazelnut-chocolate ganache (Nutella), and a thin wafer in the form of a ball and covered in hazelnut pieces with a chocolate glaze.

Growing up in Southeast Asia, Ferrero Rocher was considered a luxury brand. It was always seen as high-quality and one of the best chocolates to give as a gift. Even though I used to eat a lot of it as a kid, I have not had Ferrero Rocher for many years as an adult so these are definitely very nostalgic.

Ferrero Rocher Chocolate Packaging

The packaging hadn’t changed much since I last had it. It was very true to the Ferrero Rocher brand. The chocolate balls were wrapped in gold foil, with a chocolate liner glued under it and a sticker with the Ferrero Rocher brand placed on top of it. The box was covered in plastic and it also has an outer cardboard sleeve. The branding and color scheme was classic and timeless. However, the packaging was not environmentally conscious. There were a lot of unnecessary plastic layers and this was a common theme in Ferrero Rocher chocolates, no matter the size.

Ferrero Rocher Chocolate Taste

The taste was for the most part the same as I remember it to be. It was a great mix of textures and flavor. It is difficult to dislike the combination of chocolate, hazelnut, and sugar. However, I did notice a strange almost chemical-like aftertaste, most likely due to the vanillin and palm oil in the ingredients. Vanillin is a synthetic flavoring made to mimic the taste of vanilla. Palm oil is a cheaper and lesser-quality substitute for cocoa butter. Palm oil is also known to be bad for the environment due to its farming practices causing deforestation and habitat loss for many animals.

Ferrero Rocher Ethics

Moreover, the company had a history of prioritizing profits over ethical practices. Ferrero Rocher had come under fire in the past for using child labor both for their hazelnuts and cocoa. Even though the company had pledged to be better and be more accountable, they have not proven any changes or results.

Conclusion

In conclusion, I really appreciate the gift and it was a childhood favorite but the fact that there are articles calling the company out for using children as young as 6 years old for labor is absolutely unacceptable. I also dislike the use of vanillin and palm oil in the product. I will not be supporting or recommending them until there is concrete evidence of drastic changes in the company.
