I signed up for the subscription box in January 2023 after seeing teasers for the purple yam bar on Instagram. I am a huge fan of purple yam and ube desserts so I was very excited. You can choose between two plans: First Nibs Two Bars and First Nibs Three Bars. The cost of First Nibs Two Bars is $19.95 and the cost of First Nibs Three Bars is $24.95. First Nibs Two Bars include two innovative monthly micro-batch bars while First Nibs Three Bars include those two bars plus a Raaka classic chocolate bar flavor. I chose the three-bar option.
Unroasted Cocoa Beans
One of the things that set Raaka apart from other chocolate companies is their use of unroasted cocoa beans. Most chocolate companies roast their cocoa beans before turning them into chocolate, but Raaka skips this step in order to preserve the unique, complex flavors of the cocoa beans. This results in chocolate that tastes different from the mass-produced chocolate that most people are used to.
The January Box
The following are the bars I received in my January First Nibs box:
1) Purple Yam Mochi (the one I’m most excited about)
2) Chili Chocolate Crunch (a brilliant collaboration with Momofuku)

All the chocolate bars have an intense flavor and varying interesting textures. It was a real culinary experience! The packaging of the chocolate bars was also noteworthy. I am a big fan of the sleek and minimalistic design. The box came with a beautiful card that explains the origins of the cocoa beans and the inspiration behind the flavors. My favorite one was the purple yam mochi chocolate bar.
