Theo Chocolate Caramel Collection Review

I picked up a box of the Let it Snow Caramel Collection when I went to the Theo Chocolate store after doing the Theo Chocolate factory tour experience. One of the samples on the tour was the sesame milk chocolate caramel and I wanted more.

Theo Chocolate is the first bean-to-bar chocolate company in the United States and makes amazing chocolate bars and confections. You can easily find their bars in grocery stores. I’ve tried many of their chocolates including best-sellers like the peanut butter and jelly cups, 70% sea salt dark chocolate, and the big daddy bar.

What is chocolate-covered caramel?

If you’ve never had Chocolate-covered caramel before, chocolate-covered caramel is a sweet confection made by coating a soft, chewy caramel with a layer of chocolate. The chocolate is typically either milk chocolate or dark chocolate and can be either smooth and creamy or rich and bittersweet, depending on the type of chocolate used. The combination of soft, rich caramel and smooth, creamy chocolate creates a unique and delicious taste and texture.

Theo Chocolate Caramel Collection Packaging

The Let it Snow packaging included a white box with the Theo logo and a mint paper sleeve decorated with white Christmas ornaments and gold accents. It was very festive and perfect for the holidays. You don’t even need to wrap this up to give it as a gift!

Appearance

All the caramels were uniform in size and color. Each of them was elegantly decorated with decorations that indicate their respective flavors. For example, coffee grounds for milk chocolate peppermint mocha caramel, and sesame seeds for milk chocolate sesame caramel.

The Collection Box included 3 pieces of each of the following flavors:

  • Milk Chocolate Peppermint Mocha Caramel
  • Milk Chocolate Sesame Caramel
  • Dark Chocolate Apple Cider Caramel
  • Milk Chocolate Gingersnap Caramel

Milk Chocolate Peppermint Mocha Caramel

The Milk Chocolate Peppermint Mocha Caramel had a distinct peppermint flavor and a rich, creamy mocha flavor. The peppermint flavor came from the addition of peppermint oil to the caramel filling, which gave it a refreshing, cool taste. The mocha flavor came from the addition of coffee to the caramel filling, which gave it a rich, bold flavor. The combination of peppermint and mocha flavors with the creamy milk chocolate coating created a unique and delicious taste that embodied the coziness of the holiday season. These caramels were garnished with crushed coffee grounds. It was a great combination of flavors but was not my favorite since I don’t like the taste of coffee.

Milk Chocolate Sesame Caramel

The Milk Chocolate Sesame Caramel was my favorite out of all four flavors. It was also my favorite sample I tasted while touring the Theo chocolate factory. It combined the sweet flavor of milk chocolate with the nutty and slightly savory flavor of sesame seeds. Sesame seeds are often used in Asian desserts and I have not seen them used in caramel before. I thought it was very creative. The sesame seeds gave the caramel a unique, nutty flavor and the sesame seed garnish on top gave a slightly crunchy texture. I would definitely love a box with only this flavor.

Dark Chocolate Apple Cider Caramel

The Dark Chocolate Apple Cider Caramel was interesting. The caramel portion tasted like a slightly sour species of apple cider. It was the only one covered in smooth dark chocolate. The decoration was sugar and mulling spices which I liked. I think it overall lacked sweetness and while still delicious, this caramel was my least favorite of the bunch.

Milk Chocolate Gingersnap Caramel

This was my second favorite caramel flavor. I didn’t think I was going to enjoy it at first since ginger, caramel, and chocolate are a pretty strange pairing. However, the spiced caramel with a little bit of molasses really worked together well. The chocolate was decorated with a minimalist white chocolate line. It was simple yet attractive.

Quality

The quality of these caramels was exceptional and it is one of the best chocolate-covered caramel I’ve ever had. It is certainly the most complex and creative I’ve ever come across.
