Endangered Species Chocolate Oat Milk Rice Crisps + Dark Chocolate Bar Review

Rating: ★★★★ 3.6/5

It’s rare to find a chocolate bar that is delicious, affordable, easily accessible, ethical, and vegan but this Endangered Species Chocolate bar might just check all the boxes.

This Endangered Species Chocolate bar was a gift from one of my friends (Thanks, Mariah!). I’ve seen their brand a few times in the grocery store but this will be my first time tasting one of their chocolates.

The Brand

Endangered Species Chocolate is a unique brand because its mission includes creating real, delicious chocolate and using the proceeds to help conserve endangered animals. The company donates 10% of its annual net profits to help species, habitats, and humanity all over the world.

Packaging

I think the packaging represented the brand very well. I liked the logo in gold foil and the art style of the gorilla and leaf pattern. The packaging conveyed a lot of information without being too overwhelming. I also liked the clear expiration date on the back. However, it was not the most aesthetically-pleasing or unique chocolate packaging in the market. Green is not usually associated with chocolate or desserts, it is usually associated with vegetables and salads. Those that are not familiar with the brand, like my sister who thought that the bar includes endangered chocolate species, might also be confused by the theme of the packaging.

Appearance

The bar was brown, somewhere in between dark chocolate and milk chocolate browns. The sides and bottom of the chocolate bar were glossy while the top part of the chocolate bar was matte. Their initials “ESC” in a globe reminiscent of the United Nations decorated the top of the bar.

Flavor, Aroma, and Texture

I was absolutely impressed by how delicious this chocolate bar was. The first thing I tasted was strong, fruity, but not overpowering dark chocolate, followed by a pleasantly sweet and cooling aftertaste as the chocolate dissolved in my mouth. The rice crisps added crunch and an earthy flavor to the chocolate bar.

The chocolate bar has a strong, sweet smell, most likely from cane sugar. The chocolate had a nice, crisp snap, an indication of well-tempered chocolate. It didn’t melt on my hands and was actually quite hard at room temperature. It only slightly melted in my mouth after plenty of chewing. The oat milk added creaminess without dulling the flavors.

Quality

The quality of the ingredients is impressive for this price point. The chocolate bar does not contain any alternate fats, fillers, or additives. Many of the ingredients are fair trade and organic.

Ethics

Endangered Species is a very ethical and sustainable brand. The company donates ten percent of its net profits to save wildlife. With this particular bar, the proceeds will be used to conserve Grauer’s gorillas. It is vegan and Fairtrade certified. It is also made in the United States.

Overall, this chocolate bar is high-quality, affordable, ethical, and unique. It is a must-try if you are vegan or dairy-free. Additionally, you can feel good about supporting this ethical brand and its mission to conserve wildlife. I am excited to try more chocolate bars from Endangered Species Chocolate in the future.
